Leading pounamu artist, Lewis Tamihana Gardiner (Te Arawa, Ngati Awa, Te Whanau-a-Apanui, Ngai Tahu), will be exhibiting at Tauranga Art Gallery this winter.

Gardiner is considered a leading contemporary figure in jade carving; known for his ability to produce work on a large scale as well as smaller intricate items. Gardiner is attracted to working with jade for its solidity, beauty and ancestral connection. He is known for his unique design aesthetic, use of inlay and incorporating several varieties of jade in a single work to create depth and variety.

He is based in Rotorua and graduated in 1994 from the Waiariki Institute of Technology in Maori Craft and Design. Lewis has been the recipient of the Mana Pounamu Award for Contemporary Maori Design multiple times and in 2003, he spent time in China with a master jade carver.

This exhibition will run from 22 June through to 13 October 2019.
