Trevor Bentley’s talk will cover the various attempts by enemy musket armies (all unsuccessful) to defeat Ngai Te Rangi in this era. A very exciting and dramatic part of Tauranga’s early history!
Based in Papamoa, Trevor worked as a high country station hand, deer culler and freezing worker before training as a history teacher and graduating extramurally with a doctorate in 2007. His interest in NZ history led to three Penguin books: Pakeha-Maori (1999), Captured by Maori (2004), Cannibal Jack (2010), and Tribal Guns and Tribal Gunners (Willsonscott, 2014). A recipient of five overseas travel awards including a Winston Churchill fellowship, his current passions are coffee, chocolate, captives and cannon.
A performance by a kapa haka group will introduce our Matariki speaker, Trevor Bentley.
