Opus Orchestra is thrilled to be working with Kiwi cello prodigy, Matthias Balzat. Matthias gained entry to Waikato University studying under James Tennant at just 14 years of age, and already has a collection of prestigious awards to his name. Highlights from 2016 include winning the inaugural Wallace International Cello Competition. and also the Royal Over-Seas League Chamber Music Competition with the Trio ‘Aurelian’.

The programme is designed as a Russian view of the Classical period, including Prokofiev’s popular “Classical” Symphony. Matthias will perform a treasure from the cello repertoire in Tchaikovsky’s beautifully crafted “Variations on a Rococo Theme”. Mozart’s “Jupiter” Symphony takes pride and place as the ‘genuine’ classical masterpiece of the evening.

Balzat is becoming a well-known name in the New Zealand music scene – come and see why!
