Spanish guitarist Pablo Sáinz Villegas makes his New Zealand debut performing Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez. Rodrigo’s best-known work, which established his reputation as one of the most significant Spanish composers of the twentieth century will be brought to life by Sáinz Villegas, who is known for his rich and full sound.
Leonie Holmes’ atmospheric Frond unfurls with wisps of delicate melodic fragments – an effect continued in Béla Bartók’s ever evolving Concerto for Orchestra. Together they make a brilliant kaleidoscope of colours and effects.
Such precise soundscapes require a nuanced hand and there is none better than Maestro Alexander Shelley. His intelligent, artistic interpretations are already familiar to NZSO audiences who last welcomed him to New Zealand in 2014.
