Te Whānau O Matariki - an Exhibition

Friday 07 June to Tuesday 02 July

Fri 07 June to Tue 02 July

The Peoples Gallery, 159 17th Avenue, Tauranga

Te whānau o Matariki is the name given to a group of established and emerging artists gathered as a family under the Matariki star, and exhibiting over this special period of the New Zealand calendar. Join us for the opening of the exhibition at 5.30pm on Friday 7 June – with a formal blessing, ceremony and entertainment.

Exhibition director Nataria Hepi-Te Keeti has aligned Incubator Creative Hub/Satellite Studios resident and established artist Arohanoa Mathews with talented local/national emerging artists to create a powerful group exhibition. She has invited the artists to present work in honour of Matariki. The combination of artists from emerging to mid-career is likened to the stars of the Matariki constellation, a gathering of artists to celebrate as a clustered group of talent that shines bright like the stars.

Nataria Hepi-Te Keeti, Director of Generation Gateway Global Management says "My high is watching artists achieve and accomplish their dreams. Artists at times have overcome adversary and challenges in their lives. They can express themselves through art; it is a powerful means of healing and growth.”

Simone Anderson, Director of The Incubator Creative Hub says "These exhibitions are powerful and empowering and reflect The Incubator’s overarching philosophy of collaboration, diversity, the exchange of ideas and mentorship within the ever growing creative sector”.

April Shwe sums it up best in her response to Matariki: “We are all stars wrapped in skin, the light that you have been searching for has always been within.”

All are welcome to the opening of Te whānau o Matariki at the People’s Gallery – Toi ka rere on Friday 7 June at 5.30pm. There will be a formal blessing and opening ceremony of two other exhibitions concurrently; Michelle Estall - Ruahine and Mumu Moore – Mātātoa Mumu Returns. The opening night entertainment will be delivered by The Vocal Chords - BOP Health Providers Choir, the BOPDHB Kapa Haka Group and Mana Farrell & the Maiden Warriors. This is a not to be missed series of events highlighting the importance of Matariki in Tauranga Moana.

This exhibition runs from 7 June until 2 July 2019.
