Thursday, 21 June 2018 marks the 154th anniversary of the Battle of Te Ranga in Tauranga.
Come and join us at 7am for a dawn service to commemorate this event, which took part two months after the Battle of Gate Pā at Pukehinahina.
The Battle of Te Ranga rates amongst the bloodiest of the New Zealand Wars. In desperate hand-to-hand fighting, ‘British troops exacted terrible vengeance for their defeat at Gate Pā’ (Cowan, 1983, p. 439) and Tauranga lost some of their finest fighting chiefs; including Rawiri Puhirake and Henare Taratoa.
The service will be followed by refreshments at the offices of the Western Bay of Plenty District Council.
